Repetitive Behaviour Questionnaire-3 (RBQ-3)

Type of Measure: The Adult Repetitive Behaviour Questionnaire-3 (RBQ-3) is a 20-item self-report questionnaire that is based on the RBQ-2 and RBQ-2A. The RBQ-3 measures restricted and repetitive behaviours such as routines and rituals, repetitive motor behaviours, sensory interests, and repetitive actions with objects. It is suitable for adults and only accessible to those with sufficient cognitive resources and verbal ability.
The RBQ-3 is a 20-item questionnaire based on the RBQ-2. (Leekam et al., 2007) and the RBQ-2A (Barrett et al., 2015). In a study of typically developing children studied at ages 15 months at 2 years and at 6 years, the RBQ-2 showed good internal consistency (Arnott et al., 2010; Leekam et al., 2007; Uljarevic et al., 2017). Response choices are based on current behaviour (seen in the last two weeks). There are four alternative responses for each item (1: never/rarely; 2: mild/occasional; 3: marked/notable, 4. serious/severe). A Mean Total Score (score range of 1.00 to 4.00) is calculated for each individual by adding the responses for each item completed in the questionnaire and dividing by the number of questions completed by the respondent.
Target Population: Adults (18 years and older)
Measurement properties and previous use: The psychometric properties of this evaulation tool were examined among university students in the UK and adults in Australia (Barrett et al., 2015). Results from a Principle Components Analysis suggest a two-factor structure – motor behaviors (coefficient alpha = 0.79) and preference for for sameness (coefficient alpha = 0.83). The RBQ-2A is a relatively new measure, but the developers assert that the RBQ-2A is a useful self-report measure of repetitive and restrictive behaviors in adults and reportedly discriminates between adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and neurotypical individuals.
